This role combines hands-on engineering, architectural ownership, and technical leadership to deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable backend services.You’ll guide engineering practices across multiple teams, influence technology decisions, and help align backend strategy with wider business goals.Key ResponsibilitiesDefine and evolve backend architecture for scalability, maintainability, and performanceSet coding standards and champion secure development practicesInfluence technology choices, frameworks, and toolingLead improvements to CI/CD pipelines, build processes, and operational workflowsCommunicate technical risks clearly to non-technical stakeholdersLead projects with a focus on strong systems design and engineering outcomesContribute to critical backend systems when requiredReview and refine key codebases to ensure alignment with architectural goalsProvide technical oversight for major initiativesCoach and develop engineers, strengthening backend capability across the organisationFacilitate design discussions, code reviews, and technical problem-solving sessionsBuild consensus on technical decisions across teamsIdentify and address technical debtIntroduce new backend technologies and engineering practicesDrive improvements in reliability, scalability, and delivery speedStay up to date with backend technology trendsShare knowledge through internal workshops, presentations, and forumsSupport recruitment and promote a strong engineering cultureEnsure backend systems align with recognised security and compliance standardsKey Skills & ExperienceStrong experience building backend systems using Java (Java 11+) and Spring BootProven ability to design and lead backend architecture for complex platformsStrong experience with AWSExperience with Kubernetes and containerised environmentsKnowledge of Kafka and event-driven architecturesExperience designing RESTful APIs and microservice architecturesStrong understanding of SQL and NoSQL databasesExperience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelinesComfortable working in Agile teams using Git-based source control and toolingKnowledge of recognised security and compliance frameworksA natural technical leader who enjoys mentoring and influencing othersApply Today!Location:Newcastle upon TyneTyne and WearNewcastle upon TyneNE12 8BXSalary:80000 - 90000Sector:Java  Type:PermanentPosted:02/09/2026
