Project Design Engineer
Gateshead
£40,000 (DOE)

We are hiring a motivated and capable Project Design Engineer to join our clients engineering team and support the delivery of industrial hydraulic projects from initial customer requirements through to design, manufacture, testing, commissioning and final project completion.

The successful candidate will have relevant engineering design experience and a practical understanding of hydraulic, mechanical and electrical/control systems. You will be involved in developing engineering solutions, producing drawings and hydraulic schematics, carrying out engineering calculations, selecting and sizing components and supporting projects through the manufacturing and testing process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and clarify customer requirements and develop suitable engineering solutions.
  • Produce engineering drawings, hydraulic schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Carry out engineering calculations and select and size appropriate components.
  • Prepare technical specifications and support the preparation of quotations.
  • Work with suppliers and subcontractors to support successful project delivery.
  • Identify and resolve technical problems throughout the design and manufacturing process.
  • Support technicians and engineers during assembly, testing and commissioning.
  • Improve the reliability, and serviceability of engineering solutions.
  • Ensure projects meet customer requirements, agreed timescales and financial targets.
  • Produce final as-built drawings and project documentation.
  • Attend the workshop and customer sites when required.
  • Identify potential risks and issues early and take action to maintain project deadlines.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Relevant engineering design experience.
  • Good understanding of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical/control systems.
  • Ability to carry out engineering calculations.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods.
  • Experience using CAD software; Autodesk Inventor experience would be advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving and practical engineering skills.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
  • Interest in working across both office-based and practical workshop environments.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites when required.
  • Eligible to work permanently in the UK.

Desirable

  • Experience in the design of industrial hydraulic systems.
  • Experience producing hydraulic schematics.
  • Experience supporting testing and commissioning activities.
  • Autodesk Inventor experience.
  • Experience communicating directly with customers and supporting engineering projects.
